Repair or Replace Your Water Heater? Here’s How to Decide
Repair May Make Sense When...
KEEP IT RUNNING
✓ The water heater is relatively young and otherwise in good condition.
✓ The problem is a replaceable component such as a thermostat, heating element, valve, or ignition component.
✓ The tank itself isn’t leaking or showing significant corrosion.
✓ This is the first major repair rather than one of several recent problems.
✓ The cost of repairing it makes sense compared with replacing the system.
Sometimes a repair really is all you need.
Replacement May Make More Sense When...
TIME FOR A CHANGE
✓ The water heater is approaching or beyond its expected service life.
✓ The tank itself is leaking.
✓ There is substantial corrosion or deterioration.
✓ You’re experiencing repeated repairs or recurring performance problems.
✓ The system no longer provides enough hot water for your household.
✓ You want to improve efficiency or consider a tankless system.
We’ll explain your options—not pressure you into one.
Not sure which side you’re on? That’s what we’re here for. We’ll inspect the system and give you a straightforward recommendation.
Common Water Heater Problems
No Hot Water
Caused by issues like heating elements, thermostats, ignition systems, gas supply, or electrical problems.
Not Enough Hot Water
Could be a failing component, sediment buildup, the wrong size tank, or increased household demand.
Water Heater Is Leaking
Leaks can come from a valve, fitting, or the tank itself. A leaking tank cannot be repaired.
Strange Noises
Popping, rumbling, or banging noises are often caused by sediment buildup inside the tank.
Rusty or Discolored Water
Can indicate corrosion or other issues inside the water heater or plumbing connections.
Water Too Hot or Not Hot Enough
Temperature problems may involve thermostats, heating components, or another system issue.
Our 4-Step Water Heater Service Plan
1. Tell Us What’s Happening
Call or request service online and tell us what your water heater is doing. No hot water, leaking, making noise, inconsistent temperatures—we’ll start with the symptoms.
2. We Diagnose the Problem
A plumber inspects the system, identifies the likely cause, and explains what we find in plain English.
3. Review Your Options
If the water heater can reasonably be repaired, we’ll explain the repair. If replacement makes more sense, we’ll explain why and help you compare appropriate options.
4. Repair, Replace & Verify
Once you approve the work, we’ll complete the service and test the system before we’re finished. If we’re replacing the water heater, we’ll also remove the old unit.

How Long Do Water Heaters Last?
A traditional tank water heater commonly lasts around 8–12 years, although actual service life can vary based on the unit, installation, water quality, maintenance, usage, and operating conditions.
Tankless systems can often have a longer service life when properly installed and maintained.
Age Is Only Part of the Decision
A well-functioning older system doesn’t automatically need to be replaced simply because it reached a particular birthday. Likewise, a newer system with a leaking tank may need replacement.
We look at the condition of the system, type of failure, repair history, performance, safety, and repair cost before making a recommendation.
Tank vs. Tankless: Thinking About Replacement?
TRADITIONAL TANK WATER HEATERS
A proven choice for many homes. Traditional systems heat water and maintain a stored supply that’s ready when you need it.
✓ Lower initial equipment cost in many situations
✓ Straightforward replacement
✓ Familiar technology
✓ Multiple tank capacities
✓ A simple solution for predictable household demand
TANKLESS WATER HEATERS
Hot water on demand without a storage tank.
✓ Continuous hot water when properly sized
✓ A smaller equipment footprint
✓ Potential efficiency advantages
✓ Longer potential equipment life
✓ To eliminate a large stored-water tank
Can Any Home Switch to Tankless?
Not necessarily without modifications. A tankless conversion may require changes to gas supply, venting, electrical service, plumbing, or installation location. That’s why we evaluate the home before recommending a conversion.
